interview with rene macdonald
Rene Macdonald, founder of clothing brand Lisou, talks to Bonheur Living about her worst fashion disaster and her love for disco.

Rene Macdonald is the Founder and Creative Director of quite possibly the most joyful clothing line that has ever existed – Lisou.

Spending her early years in Tanzania before moving to the UK; and then subsequently travelling often between the two – Rene is synonymous with the use of bold, bright colours and clashing prints – drawing inspiration from the fashions of her homeland.

Launching merely 4 years ago, in 2018, Rene and her brand have tapped into the zeitgeist of dopamine dressing (which we adore at Bonheur Living) and has already won over a slew of celebrity fans.

In the words of Rene ‘bold is the new black’ and we couldn’t agree more.

What is your go-to happy song?

Anything disco or 70s. My favourite at the moment is Melba Moore ’This Is It’ Listen here

What outfit makes you look back and laugh at it being so bad/ridiculous?

Some years ago I bought a leather dress that was truly awful, I have no idea what I was thinking.  The leather was too stiff, so it didn’t move like it shouldn’t have done. Thankfully I have an amazing goddaughter who takes my poor purchases, and everything suits her.

What’s your favourite food memory?

Delicious homemade biscuits that my mother used to make which I now make for my own children.

What do you like about yourself?

I’m always calm in a crisis as well as being very solution based.

What is your favourite vice?

I don’t believe in ‘it’s not possible”.  I will spend hours trying to make it happen and won’t give up until I get the solution I need.

You’ve stumbled on a teleportation device – where do you go?

I’d go back in time so I can see my parents. I have no interest in knowing the future….life is so much more exciting when you don’t know.  The challenges help you to learn and grow.

What’s the best decision you’ve made in your life?

Starting my brand and of course deciding to have a family.

You are running late to meet your best friend at a bar. What drink do they have waiting for you when you arrive?

A vodka sour or a glass of champagne!

What cause makes you want to take to the streets and protest?

An awful lot.  Any kind of injustice or racism.  Basically anything that affects people’s quality of life.

What does happiness mean to you?
Being at home with my husband and children and cooking all their favourite meals.
